Horses have long been known for their ability to connect with humans on a deeply emotional level. Their calm presence, quiet understanding, and gentle spirit have the power to comfort people in ways words often cannot. These connections can facilitate deep healing and personal growth for people. At B.E.A.R. Ranch, that healing connection is at the heart of our mission — a mission born from the life, love, and legacy of Brooke.
Understanding Equine Therapy and the role of B.E.A.R. Ranch
Brooke had a deep love for animals, especially horses. She found peace at the ranch in ways that are difficult to explain unless you experienced it alongside her. Riding horses at Lucky Stables in Neenah became one of the places where she felt safest, calmest, and most free. No matter what she was carrying emotionally, the horses had a way of soothing her anxieties, quieting the noise of the world, and helping her simply breathe again.
After Brooke tragically lost her life due to a domestic violence situation, our family knew we wanted her story to become a source of hope and healing for others. B.E.A.R. Ranch was created to continue Brooke’s light by helping women and children who may be walking through fear, trauma, anxiety, grief, or abuse find the same peace Brooke experienced through horses and nature.
Through our partnership with Lucky Stables and Harbor House in Appleton, B.E.A.R. Ranch hopes to provide opportunities for women and children affected by domestic violence to experience the comfort, connection, and emotional healing that horses can bring. For many survivors, healing can feel overwhelming and lonely. Horses offer something incredibly unique — they do not judge, they do not ask questions, and they respond purely to emotion and trust.
Equine therapy and horse interaction can help individuals rebuild confidence, process trauma, reduce anxiety, and rediscover a sense of safety. Horses are naturally intuitive animals that mirror human emotions, often helping participants recognize and work through feelings they may struggle to express verbally. For children especially, the bond formed with a horse can create comfort, trust, and emotional security during difficult times.
At B.E.A.R. Ranch, we believe healing happens through connection — connection to animals, to nature, to supportive people, and to hope itself. Brooke’s spirit lives within that mission. She was vibrant, compassionate, fiercely protective, and full of life. She loved music, laughter, dancing, and making others feel seen and loved. Most of all, she had a heart that deserved peace.
Now, through B.E.A.R. Ranch, Brooke’s love for horses and her personal experiences will help create a place where others can begin healing too. This is more than a ranch. It is a living legacy of love, resilience, compassion, and hope. Every woman, every child, and every family who walks through our gates will carry a piece of Brooke’s light forward.
One hoofprint, one connection, and one healing journey at a time.
Equine therapy, also known as horse therapy, involves interactions between patients and horses to promote emotional growth and healing. This form of therapy is particularly effective for individuals dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. The presence of horses can help individuals develop trust, improve communication skills, and foster emotional regulation.
How Equine Therapy Works
Building Trust: Horses are prey animals and are naturally attuned to their environment. They can sense human emotions and respond accordingly. This sensitivity allows individuals to experience a unique form of trust-building, as they learn to communicate and connect with these majestic creatures.
Non-Verbal Communication: Much of equine therapy focuses on non-verbal cues. Participants learn to express themselves through body language and tone, which can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with verbal communication.
Emotional Reflection: Horses often mirror the emotions of those around them. This reflection can help individuals recognize and process their feelings, leading to greater self-awareness and emotional healing.
Goal Setting and Achievement: Working with horses requires setting goals, whether it’s grooming, leading, or riding. Achieving these goals can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment.
